Because of this composition, it is believed to have excellent healing effects on bones, which led to its German name "Beinbruchstein" (bone-break stone). A unique feature of calcite is its double refraction, which gave rise to its variety, called "Doppelspat" (double spar). Due to this special property, pure crystals are also used in the optical industry. However, due to its low hardness, calcite is less suitable as a gemstone, although it is occasionally cut into cabochons or polished in a smooth cut. Because of its abundance, calcite appears in various colors and forms.
