Mannerism---There was a time when "delay" could be privileged.
There was a time when "delay" was a privilege.
Palazzo del Te, a summer residence in Mantova, Italy. In fact, this was originally a secret house built by Federico, the Marquis of Mantova, to keep a woman in hiding from his strong mother, Isabella d'Este.
This was the period of Mannerism after the Renaissance. Giulio Romano, an architect and painter, was asked by Federico to build this pavilion. The architecture and murals are full of intellectual tricks that poke fun at the orthodox aesthetic of the Renaissance, and have a curious degree of sophistication.
Why is Arata Isozaki attracted to the pavilion? ......?
He talks about the historical background from the Renaissance to Mannerism, overlapping 16th century Italy and 20th century postmodernism. The similarities between Romano and Isozaki, the genesis of the Japanese tea house, his own "theory of technique," and "Evangelion." ...... The story unfolds in dizzying fashion. The modernity of Italy's 16th century is stimulating in this book.
