Architectural Pilgrimage (8) The Mansion of Mannerism: Palazzo del Te Arata Isozaki + Nobuyoshi Araki Rikuyosha/Japanese/1980/30×23 Mannerism---There was a time when "delay" could be privileged. There was a time when "delay" was a privilege. Palazzo del Te, a summer residence in Mantova, Italy. In fact, this was originally a secret house built by Federico, the Marquis of Mantova, to keep a woman in hiding from his strong mother, Isabella d'Este. This was the period of Mannerism after the Renaissance. Giulio Romano, an architect and painter, was asked by Federico to build this pavilion. The architecture and murals are full of intellectual tricks that poke fun at the orthodox aesthetic of the Renaissance, and have a curious degree of sophistication.
