Henri Cartier-Bresson - A Propos de l'U.R.S.S. - 1973
This rare first edition copy of this book by legendary Magnum photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson is an in depth exploration of the former Soviet Union. As one of the first Western photographers to be allowed access to post-war USSR, this book builds on his earlier work about the People of Moscow made in the early 1950s. Taken during the autumn of 1972 and the spring of 1973, the images in this book are divided into four sections and depicts scenes taken in the main cities of Leningrad and Moscow before exploring the hinterland of Russia, the Baltic states, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. This is an outstanding documentary photobook where Cartier-Bresson depicts life during this time in a manner that is unparalleled in the depth and sensitivity of reportage and that carries the unmistakable mark of Cartier-Bresson's decisive moments in visual history.
This is the first edition French hardcover published by Editions Chêne in 1973 - not the later softcover reprint or the English-language edition published the following year.
