BAYENS The Dutch painter and sculptor Hans Bayens was born in Belgium in 1924. After attending the Barlaeus Gymnasium in Amsterdam he became a student at the Higher Institute of Fine Art in Antwerp, where he was taught by the painter Opsomer and the sculptor Puvrez among others. In 1949 he received a grant from the Maison Descartes to enable him to work in Paris for a year. Bayens later spent regular periods working in France (Ile-de-France, l'Oise), Belgium (Marcinelles mining disasters) and England (Brighton). From 1950 however, he settled in Amsterdam, where he still lives and works. His work reflects above all his direct involvement with the subject. He spends a long time working on one theme, whether the theatre, the circus, the literary world or a landscape. This is the only way to become completely familiar with the subject and to translate the 'unique life' of things with the rapid touch and warm colours for which he is known. His involvement is evident not only in his two-dimensional work but also in his bronzes. Bayens' sculptures are unmistakably conceived pictorially. This is shown by the lively surface treatment, the dynamic pose and their often daring, expressive form. A striking feature of his rich oeuvre is the number of 'literary' sculptures, or at least works which portray themes from literature or writers, such as Multatuli, Betje Wolff and Aagje Deken, Theo Thijssen and Nescio's Titaantjes. The high point is the 1990 sculpture of Herman Gorter. 'Personal in tradition' is how the art critic and poet Jan Engelman once described the many-sided work of Hans Bayens. APPEL RETROSPECTIEF Karel Appel stierf op 3 mei 2006 in Zürich. Nu, tien jaar later, organiseert het Gemeentemuseum Deleteen groots overzicht, orgartirospectief is meer dan enkel een eerbetoon aan een van de Dit retrojkste Nederlandse kunstek bwintigste eeuw. Het toont namelijk ook hoezeer Appel nog steeds twintie jongere generatie kunstenaars een baken is waarop ze zich kunnen oriënteren. Appel maakte met een aantal andere Nederlandse kunstenaars deel uit van de Cobra-beweging. Hun verfrissende werk vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog plaatste ons land in het hart van de actuele internationale ontwikkelingen in de kunst. Na het ulteenvallen van Cobra wist Appel als enige van de groep - althans in eerste instan-tle Internationaal door te breken. In de jaren vijftig en zestig kreeg zijn typisch Europese manier van werken een impuls in de confronta- tie met de ontwikkelingen in Amerika, waar hij vaak verbleef. Tot aan zijn dood bleef Appel een van de meest wereldwijd getoonde Neder-landse kunstenaars. Ook in deze tijd zien we dat de schilderkunst nog steeds springevend is en dat voor veel jonge kunstenaars het 'schil- derdier' Appel een inspiratie is gebleven. Zie foto's.
