His work of portraits, landscapes and still lifes are silver prints that are delicately toned and sometimes overpainted or dyed. Yamamoto Masao is inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Zen, and the belief that meditation and the pursuit of beauty play an essential role in the development of human beings. Yamamoto’s philosophical and spiritual roots contribute to his distinctive photographic style, in which the ordinary is revealed as something extraordinary. He has self-published several artist books and also published multiple collaborations with various publishers, including: "Nakazora" (Nazraeli, 2002), "Omizuao" (Nazraeli, 2004), "Where We Met" (Lannoo, 2012), "Small Things in Silence" (Editorial RM / Seigensha, 2015), "Tori" (Radius Books, 2017), "Bonsai - Microcosms Macrocosms" (T&M Projects, 2019) and "Sanasami" (IIKKI Books, 2020). Galerie Baumgarten, Freiburg. 2009. First edition, first printing. Hardcover with spine in linen (as issued). 226 x 285 mm. 48 pages. Photos: Masao Yamamoto. Text in German. Great photobook in perfect condition - signed and stamped by the artist. "Masao Yamamoto is a Japanese freelance photographer known for his small photographs, which seek to individualize the photographic prints as objects. Yamamoto was born in 1957 in Gamagori City in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. He began his art studies as a painter, studying oil painting under Goro Saito in his native city. He presently uses photography to capture images evoking memories. He blurs the border between painting and photography, by experimenting with printing surfaces. He dyes, tones (with tea), paints on, and tears his photographs. His subjects include still-lives, nudes, and landscapes. He also makes installation art with his small photographs to show how each print is part of a larger reality." (Wikipedia)
