Vincent Van der Meersch - Untitled

- Signed and dated (72) in pencil - Pr (proof) marked in pencil - Dimensions: 49 x 49 cm - Condition: In very good condition, some light foxing stains Vincent Van der Meersch (Hasselt, 1912-1996) Will be sent professionally packed and insured, with track and trace. Van den Meersch studied at the Sint-Lucas in Schaarbeek and became a teacher there in 1949. He was transferred in 1955 from the Sint-Lucas Institute in Schaarbeek to Hasselt to teach painting and drawing in the newly established Provincial Technical School for Craft arts and Architectural drawing. His assignment was to bring the at that time new trends and insights in arts into Limburg. In many articles he was therefore considered to be the pioneer of the abstract-geometric art in Limburg. In the beginning he got little appreciation in Limburg, in contrast to Antwerp, where his works were selling quickly. His work was not accepted in Limburg and one reproached him that he wanted to be too modern. He stayed at the Institute until 1977. In 1967 he founded, along with some old students including Hugo Duchateau and Jos Jans, the "Research Group". They sought, as the name indicates, innovation and emphasised creativity and criticism. They organised exhibitions, participated in competitions, issued screen printing folders etc. The Research Group fell apart after 5 years in 1972. The Research members formed with another 7 young people "De Limburgse School" but soon they all went their own way and there was no longer a homogeneous group. Van den Meersch was also a member of art circle Pro Arte.
