May Claerhout - Het zangkoor

May Claerhout: "Het zangkoor". Signed altarpiece by the well known Belgian artist. Dimensions ceramics: 42 × 33 × 5.5 cm Dimensions frame: 54 x 41 cm. In very good condition. The artwork is mounted on a wooden frame, but can also be sent without this framework. May Claerhout was born on February 21, 1939 in Pittem (West-Flanders). She made statues in terracotta, bronze, and porcelain. Her work is strongly evocative and narrative. Often she created grotesque figures. Her art was therefore sometimes described as 'folksy', although she also excelled in creating 'serious' work. The importance of her work can hardly be overestimated. May Claerhout was known both nationally and internationally, and her studio was always open for visitors, individually or in group. Her images can be found spread all over the country. In Antwerp, for example, you will find her work in the subway stations Opera and Van Eeden, the Hotel School PIVA, the ACV-building etc. To the European Parliament in Brussels the official statue of Europe can be found and to the Basilica of Koekelberg shines a majestic Damiaan image in its full glory. Also in Leuven, Turnhout, Tienen, and other Belgian cities May Claerhout is present with her art. May remained ambitious until her death. She still had many plans and accepted many commands she will unfortunately no longer be able to execute. In recent years she focused on making images in porcelain. She was, according to herself, the only one in the world who could do modelling in porcelain. In the European Parliament she received a lot of admiration and appreciation from domestic and foreign guest for these innovative creations. The same works were also on display in December 2015 in the Castle ‘De Renesse’ in Oostmalle. May Claerhout died in 2016 due to the effects of a brain tumour.
