The donatives (from Latin donatio - to donate, a donation) were minted since the 16th century mainly by city mints (Gdańsk, Elbląg, Toruń, Riga). They usually were magnificent medals made from gold and silver, which were multiples of ducats. That is why they had the value of circulation coins. They were gifts and expression of homage to the visiting high royal dignitaries or dignitaries from the monarch. The donatives often feature a typical Latin sentence 'EX AURO SOLIDO CIVITAS...', which means '...the city (name of the city) ordered minting this from pure gold'. This is a very beautiful item - mint state - PR70 (UNC) I also invite you to my other auctions. Regards.
