BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES Filippo Auti was born in Faenza in 1934, where he attended the Liceo Classico which helped to form his cultural background. Auti was an anarchist and a protester when he was very young, he left a safe job to venture courageously into the art life. He moved to Milan in the 1950s and met artists, actors and intellectuals of the time spending his time with Piero Manzoni, Lucio Fontana, Carlo Lizzani and many actors, Auti was seen by them as a transgressive, desecrating genius, a revolutionary of cynical and visionary art. Later he moved to Paris where he lived for a few years before returning to Italy in the mid-1960s living between Milan, Bologna and Rome. In Milan he frequented the artists' quarter in Brera where exhibitions dedicated to him were held, a period full of anecdotes about his extravagant behaviour, he always wandered around the clubs in Brera such as the 'Due', the 'Montmartre', the 'Torre di Pisa', where he sold his works to various customers, one of whom was Bettino Craxi who purchased many of his works at high prices. With his unpredictable behaviour Auti often said the opposite of what he thought and he shouted it to the crowd and passers-by convinced that they understood that his words were the opposite of what he thought. Some of his most repeated slogans were: 'Fuorilegge i sindacati', 'Viva Padre Pio', 'Viva Vanna Marchi', 'Viva la Fede, abbasso la Scienza', 'Viva la Controriforma, abbasso il Rinascimento', 'Viva il fascismo, abbasso la costituzione', many of these words accompanied his drawings and works with writings. Auti died in 2007 at the age of 73, for a heart attack. His colleague and friend, Martino Delego, referring to Auti's talent, says: he could have arrived on top, but unfortunately he ended up in disgrace and loneliness. Today Filippo Auti has many fans who organise in his memory many retrospective exhibitions with great success.
