Steendrukkerij de Jong & Co - Anton Beeke – Het naakte meisjesalfabet – 1970 - Kwadraat-Blad
Beeke: “Wim Crouwel designed a computer font in 1967, when computers had limited possibilities. So his 'New Alphabet' consisted only of horizontal and vertical lines. (-) Pieter Brattinga published the alphabet in the series Kwadraatbladen, a series of publications in which he gave graphic designers and artists a platform to experiment with print work on a high level. It was published for free, all over the world. Brattinga asked me to comment on the ‘New Alphabet’. My alphabet was completely useless and corresponded with the gay and rebellious spirit of the late 1960s. Especially the sleek design of modernism was made to suffer. I thought it lacked a certain playfulness and romance. For my letters, I was especially inspired by eighteenth and nineteenth century 'grubby' maritime maps and ‘posh peoples dirty pictures’. The letters are made up of carefully choreographed groups naked girls (twelve for the letters 'M' and 'W'), and closely follow the contours of classic 'capital letters'. You can use the letters without hesitation as initials for a possible new edition of the Bible. " Loose-leaf in cover.
