Max Ernst - Histoire Naturelle (1926, complete)

"Histoire Naturelle", Editions Jeanne Bucher, Paris, 1926. All the XXXIV (34) plates (vertical and horizontal) made after frottage by the artist on wove paper, original edition. ORIGINAL PORTFOLIO COVER AND COLOPHON (40 x 30 cm) in the original two-toned paper-covered portfolio with linen spine and ties. Introduction in French by Jean Arp, list of plates and the numbered justification page, signed in ink by the artist on the justification, copy 150 of 250 on this paper (the total edition was 306). Each plate: 49.8 x 33 cm. Each frame: 55.5 x 38.5 cm. On the verso of each frame signed in pen the number in Roman numerals following the colophon justification. Exhibited at Spazio Mazzotta Art Gallery, Milan, 2006. The complete collection is in general good condition, some sheets are slightly toned with occasional pale foxing. Each plate has a white passe-partout and a brown wooden frame. The original portfolio cover has some foxing, with some wear and splitting on the spine, a small water stain on the upper edge. The colophon paper has some foxing all around. Professional packaging for shipping in a wooden box made on purpose. Insurance cost included in the shipping quotation. Rare work from the beginning of the surrealist movement (1925-1940). Original collotype using the rubbing technique invented by Max Ernst, who called his process "frottage" (French for "rubbing") and claimed it as a form of Surrealist automatism. Ernst created these images by placing paper atop various materials and rubbing the surface with a pencil or crayon. Inspired by the resulting textures, he added details to transform them into fantastical landscapes, objects and creatures. Reference: MOMA Collection, NY.
