Charles Maire - Chromolithographie Absinthe, Pernod Fils - 1907 - 1900-tallet

Designed to hang inside, these chromolithographies, normally glued to cardboard, have their own charm. The most famous is that of Charles Maire's painting for Pernod Fils. The famous 52x62 cm chromolithography based on a painting by Charles Maire (1845-1919), for the Absinthe Pernod & Fils Pontarlier was at the time fixed on a canvas, giving it the appearance of an oil painting, and then framed directly at the Pernod & Fils de Pontarlier factory. At the time it was ubiquitous in almost every bar and café in France, among smokers, drinkers and gamblers; 90% of those which survived are badly damaged in terms of framing and the print is often torn. This one is in good condition except for a few small accidents which have been restored. The frame is in good condition. Embossing on the back shows the origin and date: PERNOD - 1907. This painting is 112 years old. Both Picasso and Braque were inspired by this image, using it as a starting point for some of the early Cubist works (Picasso’s “Bouteille de Pernod et verre” 1912). In an interview in 1959, published in “Paris Match” (France), the poet and artist Jean Cocteau recounts his long friendship with Picasso. He describes how a copy of this Pernod Fils chromolithography was hung in Picasso's studio at the time of the creation of one of his first Cubist masterpieces, and how Picasso later gifted it to him a souvenir. It was not the only object related to absinthe that inspired Picasso's art.
