The tradition of the Ruhla timepiece production dates back to 1890, the year in which the first timepieces were built by Brothers Thiele - Uhren und Maschienfabrik - Ruhla
The Gardé chess clocks were first used at the Chess Olympiad in Leipzig in 1960 and are since then also the official match clock at the world championships, including Karpov - Kasparov until the PCA world championship match between Kasparov and Short in London in 1993.
