Jan Wiegers (1893 Kommerzijl- 1959 Amsterdam) was co-founder of the Groninger Ploeg. When he stayed in Davos for health reasons in the early 20th century, he befriended the German expressionist Kirchner. After that, his work was characterised by bright colours and a free, powerful usage of shapes and lines. Wiegers' oeuvre is very diverse and includes both Swiss subjects and Groningen landscapes, cityscapes, nudes, still lifes, interiors and portraits. In the 1950s, when he was a professor in Amsterdam, he made many portraits. I'm offering one of his last works, created in 1958. It is a portrait of Mrs. Oosterhoff, as can be read on the back of the painting. The painting is signed at the bottom left. The dimensions are 69 x 99 cm without and 93 x 123 cm with the frame.
