Johannes Bosboom (1817-1891) Attrib. - Hoofdkerk Te Trier

Church interior of the Hoofdkerk in Trier painted by Johannes Bosboom (The Hague 1817 – The Hague 1891). Johannes Bosboom revived the painting of churches after a long period of decline in the 19th century. Bosboom began his career as a romantic realistic painter. Towards the end of his life, he simplified his compositions. In the oil paintings, he started to apply a more direct, granular paint treatment. His palette gradually became lighter. The lines were given an increasingly subordinate function. The work offered here is a wonderful example of this late and beloved style. In this painting, Bosboom has left the foreground rather dark. The light comes mainly from behind from the beech which is flooded with sunlight from an invisible light source. Sharp contours or lines can no longer be found in this work. Light and colour merge perfectly. The few churchgoers are the only ones who bring colour into the interior. The colour element in the clothes is found in many of Bosboom's pieces. Johannes Bosboom often made successful pieces several times, albeit with variations in decorations. Of the Hoofdkerk in Trier are several reprises known. I included a few thematically related works in the images. It is also not surprising that Bosboom portrayed this subject several times. It was in this church in Trier that Bosboom, after a long period of depression and artistic uncertainty, was given the energy to re-approach the church interior and create some of his best work. The painting is in good condition. There are no visible restorations or retouchings visible under UV light. The panel is smooth and stable. Verso of the panel is signed ‘J Bosboom’ with the following text underneath: “Joh. Bosboom, 1817-1891. Hoofdkerk te Trier (Grote Trier, 1871) Reprise van …..., van +- 1875. Dimensions without the frame: 25 x 16.3 cm. The frame is still in mint condition with here and there a scratch or dent. The painting will be well-packed and sent by insured and registered mail. Pickup is also possible.
