Willy Rizzo - Monographie - 2014

Willy Rizzo created his own style, a label, a signature with his name that sounds so good to the ear that it seemed predestined to become famous. Until his death in 2013, he never stopped immortalising and exalting the world around him, the actors, the artists, the fashion designers, his friends and his family, always with a personal touch, a perfect technique, a little something that made the difference. Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper, Pablo Picasso, Monica Vitti or Jack Nicholson (who had become one of his best friends), among many others, passed in front of his lens over the course of 70 years, often in a intimate setting that they loved. Willy was himself a star among the stars, he married Elsa Martinelli, played a mafia godfather in Danny DeVito's Hoffa, became Walter Rizotto in the Tintin album Les Bijoux de la Castafore. Although he started photography in 1945, at the age of eighteen, he was hired by France Dimanche to cover the first Cannes Film Festival, before becoming one of the pillars of Paris Match from its creation in 1949 and collaborating with the magazine Floque for about twenty years. In 1966, in Rome, first for his friends, he embarked with an overflowing imagination on the creation of furniture, in a style that was both contemporary and avant-garde, of elegant simplicity, with the same timelessness as his images. Through texts by Willy Rizzo gathered and published by Alexandre Maujean, a selection of his best photographs and his creative work as a designer, this book retraces the extraordinary journey of a versatile and sensual artist who spent his life creating happiness.
