Sculpture, so called 'Sedes Sapientia' (Seat of Wisdom) in Romanesque style.
From the 11th century onward statues of Mother Mary with the Child Jezus on a throne called Sedes Sapientia became popular in Spain and France.
The oldest types are the one's with the child Jezus in the middle of the upper body part of Mary.
In Catalonia a revival of this kind of statues took place in the second half of the 19th century.
Our statue is made by a Catalonian artist around 1880-1900. It's made in the style of an example from the 12th century.
On top of the head of Mary a crown was place; this part is missing.
Original polychromy. (with traces of wear and small parts missing - see photographs)
Dimensions : 63 x 21 x 15 cm.
