Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856) was a late-Edo period painter from the Owari province. He was born into a family of sculptors in Nagoya. Baiitsu studied painting under Yamada Kyujyo, a bird-and-flower painting master, and Cho Gessho, a highly respected Nihonga painter. Baiitsu stayed with Kamiya Tenyu, a local wealthy merchant and collector of old paintings, and researched reproductions of old paintings with Nakabayashi Chikuto. While influenced by the Maruyama-Shijo school, the serene and sensuous detail and clarity of his works have an original quality. He was involved with key members of the Japanese literati, i.e. Rai San'yo, and was familiar with the art of tea-making. Baiitsu is best known for his meticulous and elegant polychrome bird-and-flower paintings.
His works are held in numeral museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the British Museum, the Portland Art Museum, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the Honolulu Museum of Art, ...
