Samuel White Baker - The Albert N'yanza, Great Basin of the Nile and Explorations of the Nile Sources - 1866

The Albert N'yanza, Great Basin of the Nile, And Explorations of the Nile Sources By Samuel White Baker, M.A F.R.G.S. "The discovery of the Albert Nyanza was the most remarkable feat accomplished in Baker's adventurous career; the work of Speke and Grant was thus completed, and the source of the Nile freed from mystery. Baker's name will ever be associated with the solution of the problem of the Nile source. The fact also that the whole expedition had been independently devised and the charges thereof defrayed by the traveller added not a little to the honour of his achievement". Description Volume two only of two volumes set. Illustrated with tinted lithograph frontispieces of the lake, 6 wood-engraved plates, and 5 wood engravings in-text. Published by Macmillan and Co., London, 1866. Publishers’ original half leather red spine with marbled boards. Spine in five compartments with raised bands, gilt lettering pieces to compartment two and third. Top page edges gilt. Book Dimensions: 22 x 15 cm and Number of Pages: 384 including appendix and index Condition Firm and well- bound copy. Light wear to boards’ corners, and edges, with some tear to head of spine. Internally; in good condition. Neat old inscriptions dated 1911 on top first front free endpaper page. The two maps at rare are missing. Foxing to free endpaper pages, and occasional spotting marks on few pages (Please see pictures). Samuel White Baker “Samuel White Baker was an English explorer and was the first Englishman to sit in a high office of the Egyptian government. Many of Baker’s works shed light on the horrors of slave owners and slave trade in central Africa. His works, however, also centralized on Egypt and the Abyssinia Nile tributaries. He had an extensive knowledge of Egypt as he held important political officers in Egypt. His accounts of Egypt and the Nile River Basin are some of the most important 19th-century books on the Nile River and helped record the discovery of Lake Albert. The Albert N yanza, Great Basin of the Nile is Baker's account of his discovery of the last great source of the Nile”.
