Spillekort - Deutsche Reise-Karte - Papir
During the First World War, the Vereinigte Stralsunder Spielkartenfabriken (VSS) edited at least four war packs with German suit-signs. The best-known and most common is the "Deutsche Kriegs-Spielkarte" which was produced by the Altenburg branch (Altenburger Spielkartenfabrik). The Deutsche Kriegs Spielkarte was edited in several slightly different versions.
This is a much rarer edition called "Deutsche Reise-Spielkarte", with a different back: railway-emblem and the factory logo: a six-pointed star charged with a "B".
The cards were designed by Fritz von Lindenau and most probably painted by Georg Koch. The Deuces show the coats of arms of Prussia, Saxony, Bavaria, and Württemberg. On the court cards are reigning persons, military leaders, and politicians. The pip cards show military scenes, except the Ten of Acorns (order 'Pour le Mérite') and Nine of Acorns (Iron Cross). Tax stamp on heart-Deuce with new imperial eagle and inscription: "DEUTSCHES REICH / DREISZIG PF: / No 90". The Sixes each show words by Emperor Wilhelm II, Bethmann Hollweg, Crown Prince Rupprecht, resp. a motto.
The pack was printed with 36 cards. On the sides: "Published for the benefit of the Luftfahrerdank Berlin-Charlottenburg". Size of the cards: 78 x 45 mm.
