Røkelse-brenner (1) - Kôro 香炉 (censer) - Patineret bronse

Very large, high quality kôro 香炉 (censer) of the Chinese official, poet and calligrapher Toba, famously known for his journey on a mule. Crafted to show Toba in a seated position atop his faithful mule, he is portrayed holding a scroll in one hand and a ruyi scepter in the other. He wears a large straw hat and a finely decorated robe featuring cloud patterns and a graceful dragon design. The mule's saddlecloth boasts an embossed dragon pattern, with dangling ornaments attached to its gear, and its headpiece is embellished with a silver crest 紋 (mon) depicting three swirling commas 三ツ巴 (mitsudomoe). The bronze of this censer is finished in a deep black patina, highlighted by warm brown undertones, adding to its visual appeal and craftsmanship. The figure of Toba can be easily removed from the mule to place some incense. And his shoulder with a reticulated cloud design, through which the incense smoke elegantly swirls and escapes. According to legend, a Chinese official and poet nicknamed Toba in Japan (Su Shi in Chinese, 1036-1101), a renowned official and poet of the Song dynasty who served Emperors Shenzong and Zhezong, was unfairly exiled due to court intrigues by the latter. Embarking on his exile, he rode a mule, donned a woven wicker hat, and carried a scroll of his poetry along with a ruyi scepter, both emblematic of his former position as an imperial dignitary. Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period). Dimensions: Height 89.3 cm, Length 73.5 cm, Depth 38.5 cm. Weight 23.9 kg. Considering its age in a good condition with minor traces of wear conform age. One defect to the bronze on top, please see the last photo. For a clear condition reference, please look at the photos as well. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
