The Dartons first participation in this lucrative project was the 1798 edition; the work was first published by Newbery in 1761. The 1798 edition was criticized for passages containing "the equalizing spirit of the New Philosophy," and that spirit was further emphasized in revisions in an edition of 1806, here reprinted: Mr. Loiter "draws his large income from trafficking in Negroes, without feeling repugnance at separating husband and wife, parents and children."
