Babylonian Cone Tablet
Circa 1900-1600 BC
This pottery tablet exhibits a cone-shaped body with a recessed base and rectangular panel with an inscription.
These cone-shaped tablets were predominantly utilized for recording significant events, legal decrees, or religious rituals. The inscriptions were typically written in cuneiform script, and pressed into the soft clay surface of the cone while still wet. These cone tablets were then often buried in temple foundations or city walls as votive offerings or as markers of land ownership.
Dimensions: 130mm x 28mm; weight 120g
Provenance: Private UK Ancient Art Collection formerly acquired on the UK, European, and USA Art Markets from pre-1960s Collections.
