The beautiful illustrations are all signed by Jacques-Raymond Lucotte (1733-1804), was an 18th-century French architect, encyclopedist and engineer. He contributed to the creation of the illustrations and text for the volumes IX to XVII of the Encyclopedia of Diderot and D'Alembert. The treatise on Vignola's orders was very successful, and is characterized by the clarity of exposition, it aims to rationalize the architectural language through the definition of a definitive proportional rule deduced from Vignola's synthesis work carried out on the entire corpus of theoretical studies starting from the 1400s and the knowledge accumulated on ancient monuments. The work required a real correction of both the Vitruvian theory and the solutions adopted in the ancient monuments still observable. He also contributed over 45 commentaries and over 650 drawings to the plate volumes.
