Artist: KARL LAGASSE Karl Lagasse, born on April 4, 1981, in Paris, is a French artist. He is the creator of the One Dollar sculpture as well as the trophy for the 43rd edition of the American Film Festival in Deauville. Artistic career Karl Lagasse's career began in 1996 with the sale of his first work in Antwerp when he was 15 years old. A few years later, in 2003, he prepared his first exhibition in Paris where he displayed his works that combine collages and painting, as suggested by Yvaral Vasarely, son of the Hungarian artist Victor Vasarely, during their meeting in 1998. He started sculpting in 2004 and found inspiration while watching Les Nuits Blanches. He then began searching for his style and started the series of "Buildings," totemic works composed of different materials. That same year, he left Paris to settle in Normandy. In 2006, Isy Brachot (a famous Brussels gallery) dedicated an exhibition to him. Only one painting remained unsold. Karl Lagasse then offered it to an enthusiast who couldn't afford it. In 2008, he returned to Paris to exhibit at the Espace Pierre Cardin. Paintings, sculptures, and photographs were presented. A film about the making of the works was also screened. In 2009, he created one of his most emblematic works, the One Dollar. An artwork resulting from his admiration for the United States but also symbolizing what can be done with just one dollar; "Making art with $1". In 2010, he was chosen to represent the town of Deauville (Normandy) at the "Horsemania" World Championship held in Lexington (United States), a twinned city with the Normandy seaside resort, for which he created a sculpture. After the success of the One Dollar, which gained international acclaim, he presented another work that also became iconic, the "Cryptogram One". It was unveiled to the public at the Art Monaco fair in 2011. To celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival in 2012, he created a 2.80 m by 60 cm "Building" made of cement, wood, glass, and photos in collaboration with Corbis and exhibited it at the Carlton Cinema Club. Artists attending the festival were invited to sign the work and leave a message, including José Garcia, Michel Hazanvisius, Bérénice Bejo, Gad Elmaleh, as well as Cuba Gooding Jr., Tim Roth, Matthew McConaughey, and Zac Efron.
