Sheet from the triptych 'Shizugamine gassen no zu' 賤ヶ峯合戦之図 (The Battle of Shizugamine) - 1847-52 - Paper - Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) - Japan - Late Edo period Great Piece Of History Beautiful original woodblock printed on Japanese paper and colored by hand, right sheet of a triptych depicting the battle of Shizu-ga-mine in 1583, where Hideyoshi defeated Shibata Katsuie, in this sheet men carry bamboo poles on which the decapitated heads are strung of their enemies, some even carry heads with them. The battle took place in the very violent period before the unification of Japan around 1600. The heads of the enemies were used to count the men killed in battle and also to establish the compensation of the samurai. Signed "Ichiyûsai Kuniyoshi ga" with pawlonia seal in the lower right corner. Collectors Seal Exemplary from an international auction, in very good condition, with no obvious defects except for a transversal crease visible especially on the reverse (see photo). Margins trimmed Kuniyoshi: The Warrior Prints” by BW Robinson, number T205.
