E-Kasuri 絵絣 ikat japansk TEXTILE indigo farget 藍染 - Bomull - Taishō-perioden (1912 – 1926)

The technique of kasuri was introduced to Japan from overseas from ancient times. Especially as cotton became available to the common people, kasuri, which consists solely of indigo-dyed fabric, developed uniquely in Japan. Among them, E-kasuri(絵絣 pictured ikat) is a culture that developed only in Japan, and there are only a few regions where these weavings were made. Kurume, Iyo, Bingo, and San-in are the most famous. E-kasuri is one of these uniquely Japanese kasuri, which come in a variety of patterns, all of which are auspicious and good luck. This textile was made for bedding and is made by joining four widths together. This pattern is a Ougi (扇 Japanese fan) and geometric pattern. Ougi is one of the traditional Japanese patterns, and is considered a good omen for prosperity and good fortune because it spreads out to form the last part of the shape when spread out. Japanese indigo-dyed cloth develops a variety of colors over time that cannot be achieved with chemical dyes. Historically, Japanese kasuri was often indigo-dyed, and the more the color faded, the clearer the kasuri pattern appeared. It is not an imperfection, but one of perfect beauty. The E- kasuri is one of Japan's greatest masterpieces of the home industry.
