Katana - Japan - Edo-perioden (1600-1868)

DESCRIPTION This is a weapon from Japan called a "kabutowari." "Kabutowari" is a weapon designed for striking with a jitte-type implement. Also known as "Hachiwari," in antique folk tools and art antiques, items exceeding 60cm in length are sometimes confused with habiki-tou, a blade pull sword repurposed from Japanese swords, and both are referred to as iron swords. Primarily used by arresting officers (torikata) from the Muromachi period onward, it is a weapon and capture tool designed to block attacks from Japanese swords without causing excessive injury when used for offense, with no blade attached. Its length ranges from 16cm to 1m, often curved like a katana to deflect enemy slashes, and its cross-section is significantly thicker than a katana, resembling a pentagon, isosceles triangle, trapezoid, or ellipse, more like a rod to intercept slashes. Also, it often features a pronged hook like a jitte at the handle. Practical versions are often just wrapped with ropes or vines around the part that would correspond to the blade and integrated handle, but many are housed in highly decorated fittings, featuring advanced painting and carving. These items are crafted more for their artistic value than practical use. The attack methods using kabutowari are derived from swordsmanship, but unlike the Japanese sword, which aims for slashing, it focuses primarily on striking, similar to the jitte. Good condition, signs of wear from age, stains, rust and scratches; for condition, please, take a look at the pictures. SIZE: 45.5 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm 510 g NOITICE The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by Japan Post, DHL or FedEx depend on the situation. It takes about 3 weeks to receive normally. Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Sometimes Customes or delivery company in your country contact you for Customs clearance via phone or email. Please make sure that you could answer the phone. If you don't, the parcel will return to me and it cost more double shipping fee for reshipping.
