Mesopotamisk, gammelbabylonsk Kalsedon Stempelsegl med kultisk scene (Ingen reservasjonspris)
A finely engraved Mesopotamian stamp seal formed of a stunning transluscent grey chalcedony. The seal has an octagonal bell shape, distinctively attributable to Old Babylonia. Carved on the slightly convex base is a cultic scene, portraying a male priest-king or a worshipper standing before an assortment of possibly cultic objects. On the side of the piece is a second engraving which can also be used as a stamp. It depicts a similar figure to the first, but the slightly larger size allows for more detail in the clothing and face. The figure stands facing to the left with his hands raised in front of him. The seal is pierced at the top. There is a small chip to the reverse face, and some hairline cracks near the stamp face. These are slightly darker in colour due to sediment.
PLEASE NOTE: THE IMPRESSION IS FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY AND IS NOT INCLUDED.
Glyptic imagery representations presented on Old Babylonian cylinder seals have inspired a wide range of figural genres shown on contemporary stamp seals. Cultic scenes, where a young male worshipper standing before a divinity, embrace profound cultural implications within traditional Mesopotamian religion.
