Ikon - Russisk ikon for jomfruen Guide med Jesus Kristus - Tre
Odegitria (Greek: Odezhdiatria - showing the way), the Guide, is one of the main types of images in Orthodox iconography of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, which type of icon according to Christian tradition was first painted by Luke.
In this type of icons, the Christ Child sits on the hands of the Virgin and blesses with his right hand, and holds a scroll in his left, which corresponds to the iconographic type of Christ Pantokrator. As a rule, the Virgin is in a waist-length image, but shorter versions (the "Kazan Virgin") or full-length images are also known.
Hodegitria differs from the close image type of Eleusis in the relationship of Mary and the Child: in the center of the composition is not boundless love, but the son of God, Christ, depicted frontally. The Virgin is also depicted frontally (or with her head slightly tilted) and pointing her hand at Jesus.
From a dogmatic point of view, the main meaning of this image is the appearance before the world of the "heavenly king and judge" and worship before the Son of God.
