India - Qur'an - Surah 24, An-Nur (The Light), Verse 54 - 1425

A manuscript page from the remains of part of a Qur'an originating in the state of Bihar, India, circa 1425. This prosperous state, lying south of Nepal close bordering the Ganges river, became Muslim in the 12th century originally under the Bengal Governors. We believe this page to be from Surah 24, An-Nur (The Light), verse 54, roughly translated as: So, "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger. Yet if you turn away, then surely upon him (rests) only what he is burdened with. And upon you (rests) only what you are burdened with. And in case you obey him, you will (find) guidance. The Muslim calligraphers developed a distinctive style of script called Bihari (after the State), characterised by wide, heavy and extended horizontal lines, and thin verticals. In this case there are 11 lines of bold well executed script, with the whole in a surround frame comprised of three fine lines, two in red and one in blue. Decorative 'aya' with gold leaf mark the verses: each has a central red dot with equidistant radial arms to the circumference marked with a blue dot (Image 4c). There are recitation markings in red within the script and several devotional markings in gold Thuluth. It is on thick hand made paper and you can make out the paper support lines. The condition is very good with only slight fading to the gold aya and no staining on the front. the reverse does show some water damage, but this has not come through the paper. PLEASE NOTE. Shipping costs are not solely the cost of the delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the delivery agent for processing. The manuscript will be sent with the supporting mount to ensure safe travel.
