This exquisite piece is the work of the esteemed Japanese painter Hirabayashi Seiki (1888–1963), renowned for his Buddhist and bijinga (beautiful women) paintings. Seikii, the son of Hishikawa Moroyoshi, was born in Fukui City, and his legacy endures through this delicate portrayal of Kannon. Crafted on silk, the scroll features ethereal depictions of lotus flowers, symbolizing purity and enlightenment, enhancing the tranquil aura of Kannon. Adorned with intricate jewelry and regalia, the Bodhisattva stands amidst a dreamlike waterscape, embodying the vow of 'Nanju Bosatsu,' to personify the relief of anguish and the bestowal of happiness as written in the "Kannon Sutra." This piece comes with its original wooden box, bearing the artist's signature and seal on the lower right of the scroll and the box itself, certifying its authenticity. The ceramic rod at the bottom of the scroll adds a touch of elegance and durability to this vintage item. Please note, the scroll shows signs of its age and history, with some wear, and faint stains throughout, which do not detract from the beauty or the integrity of the artwork.
