Byôbu 屏風 (foldbar skjerm) - Gullblad, Lakk, Tre - Japan - Første halvdel av 1800-tallet (sen Edo-periode)

A fantastic, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a detailed Kanô School-style painting of a gathering of cranes standing at the edge of a meandering river surrounded by a forest of pine trees 松 (matsu). Dense gold leaf clouds encompasses the scene. Cranes and pine trees are a popular symbolic pair in Japan. In Japanese symbolism, it is said that cranes live to be a thousand years old, and serve as powerful symbols of youth and longevity in both literature and art. Pine trees also represent longevity, as well as good fortune and steadfastness. Framing the panels are two elegant brocade silk borders - a slender old pink one and a broad black one, all set within a black lacquer wooden frame with its rich original protective hardware with an engraved scrolling foliage design. Period: Japan – First half 19th century (Late Edo period). Dimensions Total width: 365.4 cm (2 x 62.1 and 4 x 60.3 cm); Height: 166.4 cm. It remains in good condition, displaying expected signs of wear and age, including old restorations, like repapering of the hinges at the back and a touch-ups in front. These details are mentioned for clarity, but they do not diminish the overall impressive appearance. For a precise understanding of its condition, we recommend closely examining the provided photos. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
