Byôbu 屏風 (foldbar skjerm) - Gofun, Sølvblad, Silke, Tre - Japan - 1800-tallet (sen Edo-periode/tidlig Meiji-periode)
Elegant, and rare medium-sized two-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a very special Rinpa School-style painting in relief on oxidized silver leaf showcasing a slanting, curving plum tree 梅 (ume) surrounded by a thatched fence. Its branches hanging over a swirling river.
What makes it special, is that the painting is done in silver paint over a relief created by a gofun 胡粉 (shell paste) underground. Silver paint and -leaf continuously undergoes the process of oxidation, which creates this beautiful aged patina.
Surrounded by 2 brocade silk borders, a black thin one, and a broad grey one. Protected by a black lacquer frame.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).
Dimensions:
Total width: 143.8 cm (2 x 71.9 cm); Height: 152.5 cm.
In a very good condition with some minor traces of wear conform age. Some old restorations of the backing paper. Please take a close look at the photos for a clear condition reference.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
