Extremely rare and highly collectible! Pieter Hugo, who created an epochal photographic art with his portraits, dedicates this book to an unusual topic from Nigeria: "Nollywood". This is the name given to Nigeria's thriving film industry, which is now the third largest in the world after the United States and India. Since the 1990s it has developed independently of state funding and produces 500 to 1,000 low-budget films a year. They are films by Africans for Africans; told in a truly unique style, full of myths and symbols. They deal with topics that are part of the daily life of Nigerians: corruption, prostitution, the occult, violence, but also romance and comedies. Pieter Hugo was fascinated by these films and their exuberant drama. For his photographic series, he asked 50 actors to recreate particularly disturbing film scenes that reflected his interpretation of this staged reality. The line between documentation and fiction is fluid in Hugo's impressive photo essays. His images play with our perception of the real world: what is actually surreal appears to be real. This volume is a magnificent example of Pieter Hugo's unique photographic art.
