Frosk - Fossilt skjelett - Rana basaltica
Offered is an exceptionally fine fossil frog specimen of the species Rana basaltica from the world famous Shanwang Biota of the Miocene of China. 17 Million years ago, the region was a shallow lake in which plants and animals were covered with a fine layer of silt which built up over the ages in thin laminae of diatomite. The fossil was encased in a block of paraffin to prevent further exfoliation of the thin laminae, as is the common procedure with fossils from this location, which are often quite moist and prone to drying out. The frog has beautifull preservation with a good bone structure visible in certain areas. The left foot and the central vertebrae have been restored, which can be seen in the last picture. Also some of the finger digits have some restoration, but original bone is visible beneath it. Please note that virtually all fossils coming from this location have some degree of restoration done to it. I alway try my best to clearly show this in my offered fossils. The buyer should be aware that all fossils from this location, including this one, are very fragile, and handling should be kept to a minimum.
