Byôbu 屏風 (foldbar skjerm) - Bladgull, Lakkert tre, Silke - Japan - Sen Edo-periode (første halvdel av 1800-tallet)

A captivating, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) presents an elaborate Tosa School 土佐派 genre painting set against a backdrop of gold leaf, vividly depicting the bustling festivities in the capital city of Edo (present-day Tôkyô) during the Edo period. In the upper left corner, the painting features Sensô-ji 浅草寺, Tokyo's oldest and one of its most significant Buddhist temples, located in Asakusa. The temple's entrance is marked by the iconic Kaminarimon 雷門, or "Thunder Gate," renowned for its immense lantern and the statues of the Shintô gods Fûjin and Raijin. At the heart of the screen is the depiction of the Kanda Matsuri 神田祭, one of Edo's three major festivals, celebrated at the Kanda Myojin Shrine 神田明神 in Chiyoda Ward. Central to this scene is the festival float featuring a rooster perched atop a drum, known as ‘Kandkodori’ 諫鼓鶏. The top center of the screen showcases viewers admiring fields of chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku). On the right, individuals from various social classes are depicted enjoying establishments offering views, treats, tea. And many more different interesting scenes are displayed on the screen brimming with detailed narratives of Edo life. These diverse images are encased within rich gold leaf clouds adorned with rippling ovals in relief. Watercolour and ink on gold leaf and paper. Surrounded by two silk borders, a thin dark-silver one and wide brown one with a square pattern. Framed by a black lacquered wood with protective hardware engraved with scrolling foliage. Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century). Dimensions: Total width: 370.4 cm (2 x 63.2 cm, 4 x 61 cm); Height: 173 cm. Considering its age, it is in a good condition with traces of wear conform age and old restorations. Please have a look at a larger restorations on the 1st panel. Some repapering of the back.
