Miyako Ishiuchi - Infinity ∞ - 2009

Infinity ∞ Miyako Ishiuchi Kyuryudo/2009/Japnese.English/182 x 257 mm This book is an anthology of Ishiuchi's quintessential "body" themes from the late 1980s to the present. At the age of 40, Ishiuchi turned her attention from landscapes and buildings to people, and photographed the limbs of a woman born in the same year in "1, 9, 4, 7. Since then, she has photographed the skin of Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno in "1906 to the skin," "Nails," which explores the ends of the male body, "SCARS" and "INNOCENCE," which are close-ups of scars, and "A to A" with the theme of transgenderism, etc. Through her series "A to A," she has been taking photographs of wrinkles and scars, etc., that mark the body. Through such series as "INNOCENCE," and "A to A," which focuses on the theme of transgenderism, she has captured the traces of life on the body, such as wrinkles and scars. In "Mother's," a series of photographs of items left behind after the death of her mother in 2000, and "Hiroshima," a series of photographs of items left behind by atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima, she traces the absent body through the clothing left behind and recalls the daily life of the deceased. Where does the body go after its limited time of life? This book traces Ishiuchi Miyako's sharply sharpened gaze, as if to explore the infinite world of Infinity, where time ticks away without end, beyond the photographed image.
