Enorm rød Onchopristis numidus Kritt sagfisk Rostral tann i naturlig matrise - Fossil tann
Here is a very nice huge Onchopristis numidus rostral tooth from this giant Cretaceous Sawfish . Preserved in its natural matrix. It comes from the Ifezouane Formation in the Kem Kem Basin of Morocco which also produces many teeth of it's key predator Spinosaurus. This tooth is in overall great shape and displays the classic "barbed hook" shape.
Onchopristis, or “giant saw”, is a genus of extinct giant sawfish that lived in the Upper Cretaceous (ending 65.4 mya) in or near North Africa. It had a long hard shovel-shaped snout called a rostrum. The saw-like rostrum, lined on both sides with modified tooth-like structures called denticles, were hooked and barbed. Onchopristis had an intimidating, 2.5 meter long rostrum which it would have used to unearth crustaceans at the bottom of shallow waters like sawfish do today.
Observations: It has only one tiny glued but not restored fracture. Really nice collector piece preserved in its natural sandstone matrix.
