de Favre / Lee Clerc - Les quatre heures de la toilette des dames - 1780

Famous illustrated book from the 18th century. Established in a rare Masonic binding. Collection of four octosyllabic poems, prettily erotic, singing of four encounters between gods and goddesses, at each time of washing (morning, noon, afternoon tea, evening). Work dedicated to her Serene Highness, Princess de Lamballe (1749-1792), known as “Mademoiselle de Carignan”, friend of Marie Antoinette, initiated into Freemasonry, she was elected grand mistress of the “Mother Scottish Lodge” in 1781. Fine binding executed in full black leather with in the center of gold and cold-stamped covers a Masonic triangle with eye of providence and the monogram AJ (unidentified). Large frame on the lace boards with cold Greek, cold plant and floral gold motifs. Smooth spine decorated with a sober golden decoration, title at the top. The delicious illustration is by Le Clerc here in the first print: frontispiece, heraldic vignette, 4 figures out of text 4 culs-de-lampe. The inserts show naked goddesses: (Diane, Thetis, Europe...). Cohen praises it: “Very beautiful illustrations; the cul-de-lampes especially are superb.” Careful printing on laid paper.
