Each separate color, which he draws in black on the plate, carries only a portion of the design; none is a complete image. The picture appears only when all seven or eight colors blend together at the end of the printing run. . In the present book . the pictures are printed only two at a time, and even here colors may be split on a plate. In effect, therefore, each picture has a unique combination of colors''.
