The print depicts a puppeteer intricately manipulating a marionette dancer, portraying the lively yet challenging dance of Sanbasō. As the performance unfolds, the strings tangle, leading to the marionette's dramatic collapse. Kunisada (1786–1865), a leading figure in the Utagawa school, is known for his dynamic and richly detailed portrayals of kabuki actors, beautiful women, and scenes from literature. His artistry brings to life the splendor of Edo culture through vivid compositions and intricate detailing. This piece carries the marks of time, with signs of repaired wormholes, creases, and stains. For a closer look at its condition, please see the accompanying photographs. We have photographed the three pieces side by side for the purposes of photography, but in reality, each is an independent single print. Dimensions of a panel: approx.
