DESCRIPTION
Beautiful shape and colored ceramic vase called "湖東焼 Kotou-Yaki."
Good condition
Kotouyaki (湖東焼) originated in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture, in the 12th year of Bunsei (1829) and was taken up by the Hikone domain in the 13th year of Tenpo (1842), establishing its system as a domain kiln. It reached its peak during the era of the 13th lord of the domain, Naosuke Ii.
After the assassination of Naosuke Ii, due to social unrest, the craftsmen dispersed, and the history of about 20 years came to an end, earning it the name "the phantom pottery". The degree of completion as pottery was very high, the firing technology was of the highest standard in the world, comparable to Jingdezhen and Imari, and the painting was delicate, luxurious, and noble, perfecting the unique taste of Kotouyaki.
Currently, efforts to revive Kotouyaki are underway, with Ichishiro Nakagawa building a kiln and continuing trial productions since 1986.
