- Under the cover of a misted moon on the evening following the festival of the cherry blossoms, he caught at her sleeve. But the lady knew well that his call to a tryst was but a token of insincere love. 花乃えんのゆふぐれおぼろ月夜にひくそでさだかならぬちぎりこそこゝろあさくみえけれ (from the song cycle Tenga Taihei 天下太平)
- At dusk on a promised evening, I followed the faint but faithful guide of incense to its source. As a panel of the bush-clover room slid open, the aroma gracefully embraced me. ちぎりしよひのたそかれしるべふかきそらだきとめいるかたのはぎの戸をひらくやそでのうつりが (from the song cycle Kokoro-zukushi 心尽)
