Kurume kasuri(久留米絣) is a type of kasuri produced in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and the surrounding area of the former Kurume domain. It is a cotton fabric that is mainly dyed with indigo. The weaving process uses indigo-dyed and white-dyed yarn (kasuri yarn) to create the pattern. The Kurume kasuri technique was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Asset in 1956. It is said to have been invented and started around 1800 by a girl named Inoue Den(井上伝), who was about 12 years old at the time. From the late Edo period onward, cotton kimonos became the clothing of the common people, and the beautiful kasuri was the daily wear of people who colored their everyday lives. The pattern is called Bunjin kasuri(文人絣)and has been used by many people for many years. Bunjin" means writers, and it came to be called this way because it was favored and used by writers.
