Victorian water filter made of stoneware, with two handles in the shape of lion masks, cream glazed. Consists of two compartments, each with a filter made of stoneware. Is filled with charcoal. You pour water into it, which is purified by the charcoal. The tap tap at the bottom is where the clean water comes out of. In great condition apart from that the lid is missing. A wooden lid has been made to replace it. On the front there are texts in three medallions in relief: 'By her Majesty’s Royal letters patent G. Cheavins Improved patent Gold medal self cleaning Rapid waterfilter Boston England New patent Removable plate' Dimensions: Height 55.3 cm, diameter 32.50 cm The Cheavin Filter Company was originally the Fulham Pottery, founded in 1671. In 1864 Bailey bought the pottery. He went bankrupt in 1889 and the company was acquired by Winston Cheavin. The pottery was named ‘The Fulham Pottery and Cheavin Filter Company Ltd’. Cheavin had already requested a patent for his water filters in 1862. In 1867 his son G. Cheavin changed the label in the text that is on this water filter. The Cheavin's filters were in demand in the Netherlands and abroad and won prizes and medals.
