Frame 63 x 73 / oil on canvas 58 x 49 cm. Willem Hamel’s subjects included forest views and landscapes with the Drenthe shepherd with his sheep. Willem Hamel attended the art academy in Rotterdam and initially worked as a decoration painter. Willem Hamel resided in: Berlin, Munich, Paris and Rotterdam until 1885, Amsterdam until 1886, Voorburg in 1887, Kralingen until 1891, Rolde until 1893, the Hague until 1898, Ede in 1899, Voorburg in 1901-1902, the Hague until 1903, Heemskerk until 1905, Germany from 1922, and Kootwijk until 1922. Willem Hamel was father to Jack Hamel. He taught a.o.: Hinke Gorter, Jack Hamel, and Jacoba van Heemskerck van Beest. Willem Hamel regularly exhibited in a.o. the Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. His work is featured in the Drents Museum in Assen and the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. Willem Hamel was known as the "sheep painter", and his style was similar to that of his contemporary and friend Anton Mauve and Taco Mesdag.
