Wooden box - DELFTSCHE SALAOLIE, N.O.F. OLIEFABRIEK DELFT - with decor after the design by Theodorus van Hoytema (1863-1917)
Very special and rare wooden box for packing and transport of bottles of Delftsche salad oil, with on the sides images of an elephant holding a bottle of salad oil with its trunk and the NOF (Nederlandsche Oliefabroek) logo flanked by two salad oil bottles with the words 'DELFTSCHE-SLAOLIE OLIEFABRIEK DELFT'. Both scenes are 'framed' by a framework of unpeeled peanuts, alternated with green leaves. After the design of Theo van Hoytema that he made in 1905.
Theodorus van Hoytema (1863-1917) was a Dutch illustrator, lithographer and graphic designer of book covers. He is especially known for his lithographic picture books with bird stories (examples of this are easy to find through a search engine).
The Nederlandsche Oliefabriek was founded in 1883 by Jacques van Marken, aiming to produce oil of groundnuts or peanuts. In 1897 the factory merged with the French company of the Emmanuel and Georges Calvé brothers and became 'Nederlandsche Oliefabrieken (NOF) Calvé-Delft'.
