Max Ernst (1891-1976) - The origin of the Clock
Original collotype from 1926 by Max Ernst. Collotype after the frottage technique (where Ernst is known for). Rare work from the early days of surrealism (movement 1925-1940). This collotype is of such great importance that the MOMA, New York, dedicates a full page to it on their website. Google: max ernst origin of the clock This is number XVI for “Histoire Naturelle” (1926).
Rare because virtually all collotypes from Ernst were destroyed in the second world war (“Entartete Art”). All other collotypes are in possession of collectors and major museums such as: Würth-collection, Moma-New York, Stedelijk Museum-Amsterdam, Kunstmuseum-Bonn.. etc.
Artwork is restored in 1992 by A.G. van Oort. The paper conservator of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
