Jan Toorop (1858-1928) is considered one of the most talented Dutch artists from the period around 1900. Like Piet Mondriaan, Jan Sluijters, Leo Gestel, and Kees van Dongen, he has contributed immensely to the development of modern art in the Netherlands. Toorop took a drawing course at the Polytechnic School in Delft (1876-1879). Subsequently, he studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam (1880-1882) and at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Brussels (1882-1885). In the Netherlands, he became the leader of the Art Nouveau movement.
In 1905 he converted to Catholicism, after which he dedicated himself almost exclusively to religious subjects and portraits, which he painted in his 'linear idealism', a religious-oriented Art-Nouveau style, with which he focused on the direction of symbolism with its refined style, and its technical virtuosity.
The frame is fully original with its very beautiful wooden mat (!!) from the 1920s; this you don’t see often.
Beautiful work in its original frame.
